Story Overview
Avery boards the steamship from Ireland, bound for a new home in Australia. En route, they pen a letter to their cousin in Victoria, describing daily life and events on board the ship.
After arriving in Melbourne, Avery and family are greeted by some unscrupulous strangers, but they find support and camaraderie from other Irish immigrants.
In each letter, Avery shares all the sights, sounds and characters of Melbourne in the 1890s – a time of gold rush grandeur, with the dark shadow of social divide and economic Depression.
Will Avery and family make it to their destination? Will Avery solve the mystery before they leave Melbourne?
